Hospitallers

Order of St. John (Also known as Hospitallers,Knights of Malta, and Chevaliers of Malta; French: Ordre des Hospitaliers, Maltese: Ordni ta’ San Ġwann) was a Christian organization that began as an Amalfitan hospital founded in Jerusalem in approximately 1080 to provide care for poor, sick or injured pilgrims to the Holy Land. After the Western Christian reconquest of Jerusalem in 1099 during the First Crusade it became a religious/military order under its own charter, and was charged with the care and defence of the Holy Land. Following the conquest of the Holy Land by Islamic forces, the Order operated from Rhodes, over which it was sovereign, and later from Malta where it administered a vassal state under the Spanish viceroy of Sicily.

Hussites

The Hussites were a Christian movement following the teachings of Czech reformer Jan Hus (c. 1369–1415), who became one of the forerunners of the Protestant Reformation. This predominantly religious movement was propelled by social issues and strengthened Czech national awareness.

After the Council of Constance lured Jan Hus in with a letter of indemnity and then put him to death on 6 July 1415, the same year in which the Council had declared itself superior to the Pope,[1] the Hussites fought a series of wars (1420–1434) for their religious and political cause.

Among present-day Christians, its traditions are represented in churches which call themselves Moravian or Unity of the Brethren churches, and in the refounded Czechoslovak Hussite Church.

Zawisza the Black of Garbów-, Sulima Coat of Arms, was a Polish mediæval knight and diplomat.

He won many tournaments and came to serve as a model of knightly virtues. His nickname is due to his dark hair and complexion, but he also wore black armor, which survives and is currently located at Jasna Góra Monastery.

In 1410 he took part in the battle of Grunwald against the Teutonic Order. After the battle he proposed a peace treaty between the Polish king Jagiełło and the Hungarian King Sigismund of Luxembourg (the 1411 treaty of Lubowla). 1416 he participated in a tournament in Perpignan in which he defeated the well-known knight John of Aragon. The following year, he became the subprefect (starosta) of Kruszwica. Soon after, he married Ofka, the widow of the king's brother, Wenceslaus King of Bohemia.

After Sigismund’s defeat at Kutná Hora, Zawisza was captured by the Czechs but released soon for a high ransom. In 1428, he fought the Turks at the Battle of Golubac on the Danube (in modern-day Serbia). He was captured and probably murdered.

After his death, he was praised the Polish historian Jan Długosz, the poet and Canon of Gniezno Adam Świnka, and by King Sigismund of Luxembourg.

For many Poles, Zawisza became a popular folk hero, famed for his bravery, reliability, and loyalty. The Polish Scouts oath is "Polegać na nim jak na Zawiszy" ('to rely on him as on Zawisza').

A monument to Zawisza at Golubac fortress, Serbia, bears the inscription: "In Golubac, his life was taken by the Turks in 1428, the famous Polish knight, the symbol of courage and honor, Zawisza the Black. Glory to the hero!"
